First Time Getting a Spray Tan in Sydney? Here's Exactly What to Expect
If you've never had a professional spray tan before, the experience can feel a little mysterious. What exactly happens? What do you wear? Is it awkward? Will it smell? Will you come out looking orange?
These are all totally normal questions — and the answers, once you know them, make the whole experience much less intimidating and much more exciting.
This guide walks first-time spray tan clients in Sydney through exactly what to expect from a Tanzola mobile spray tan appointment, from booking to the moment your tan fully reveals itself.
Before You Book: What to Know
You don't need to have any spray tan experience. Professional spray tanning is designed to be accessible to everyone. Your Tanzola technician will walk you through everything before, during, and after the appointment.
Mobile means we come to you. Tanzola's service is completely mobile — your technician brings everything needed and performs the entire treatment at your home, apartment, or hotel. You don't need a specific setup. A bathroom or any room with reasonable space works perfectly.
You can choose your depth. Spray tans don't have to be dramatic. You can choose a very subtle, natural result or something deeper. Your technician will discuss this with you at the start of the appointment.
24–48 Hours Before: Preparation
Preparation is the most important thing first-timers often skip — and it makes a dramatic difference to the final result.
Exfoliate your whole body. Use a physical scrub (a loofah, exfoliating mitt, or body scrub) on all areas, with extra attention to elbows, knees, ankles, and wrists. This removes dead skin cells and creates an even base for the solution.
Shave or wax. If you need to, do it now — at least 24 hours before your appointment. Shaving or waxing after your tan is applied removes the tan along with the hair.
Remove nail polish. If you want your hands tanned to the cuticle, remove nail polish beforehand. Otherwise, your technician will use barrier cream around nails.
Day of Your Appointment: What to Do
- Don't apply any moisturiser, body oil, or perfume
- Don't use deodorant (this can react with the solution under the arms)
- Have a clean, fresh shower before your appointment
- Wear loose, dark clothing that you don't mind potentially getting a tiny bit of tan on
During Your Appointment: The Experience
When your Tanzola technician arrives, here's what happens:
Welcome and consultation (5 minutes). Your technician introduces themselves and asks a few questions: your skin tone, desired colour depth, any areas you want to focus on or avoid, and any skin sensitivities.
Barrier cream application. Before the solution goes on, your technician applies a barrier cream to areas where tan can over-absorb: the palms of your hands, between fingers, around nails, on the soles of your feet, and around hairlines. This is what prevents the classic "tan hand" and orange feet.
Application (15–25 minutes). You'll stand in a comfortable position while your technician applies the solution using a spray gun. You'll be asked to move into different positions to ensure full coverage. Most clients wear minimal underwear or a disposable thong — your technician is a professional and will make you feel completely comfortable.
Drying (5 minutes). After application, you'll stand for a few minutes while the solution dries to the touch. You can use a small fan if needed.
Aftercare briefing. Your technician will give you specific instructions — when to shower, what to wear, how to moisturise — before leaving.
After Your Appointment: What to Expect
Immediately after: You'll see a dark brown or bronze colour on your skin. This is the guide colour in the solution, not your final tan. It can transfer to light-coloured clothing, so stick to dark, loose garments.
During development (6–12 hours): Keep your skin completely dry. Don't shower, don't exercise, don't get rained on.
Your first shower: This is exciting. The guide colour washes away, and you'll see your actual tan for the first time. It will look lighter than the guide colour — this is completely normal. It will continue to deepen slightly over the next 24 hours.
Day 2: This is when most clients think their tan looks its absolute best — fully developed, natural, and glowing.
Days 3–10: Your tan gradually fades. With good moisturisation and care, you should have beautiful colour for 7–10 days.
Don't panic about patchiness in week 2. All spray tans fade unevenly as the skin sheds — this is normal. A good exfoliation before your next appointment removes all residual colour and gives you a clean base.
